Dr. MICHEL ARMAND
BIOGRAPHY
Michel Armand, graduation from Ecole Normale Supérieure in Saint-Cloud, Ph.D. in Physics (1978), Directeur de Recherche at French CNRS (1989), Invited Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1982-83), Professor at University of Montreal (Canada) (1995-2004), Director of the Joint CNRS-UdM International Laboratory on Electroactive Materials (2000-04), Directeur de Recherche at CNRS in Amiens (France) (2005-12), now Emeritus, is visiting researcher at CIC Energigune (Spain), and at Deakin University (Australia).
During his career Michel has pioneered numerous theoretical concepts and practical applications in the field of energy-related electrochemistry. He ushered the concept of intercalation compounds for batteries (1972) and developed the solid-state Nernst model, sulfur/sulfide redox couple, polymer electrolytes for battery application (1978), new highly conductive salt families (perfluoroimides like TFSI and FSI based on Hückel-stabilised negative charges) for liquid and polymer electrolytes, carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), new solvating polymers, techniques to obtain cross-linked networks for stopping anion mobility in polymeric electrolytes, and also organic electrode materials.
He has authored and co-authored 280 publications in International Journals, 290 captivating presentations at conferences, 157 patents delivered or pending. He has been acting as a Member of Editorial Board for several journals (Solid-State Ionics, Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, Synthetic Metals, Journal of Power Sources) and is most searched member of Conferences Advisory Committees of international conferences.
Michel is the recipient of several notable awards and honors, as the Bronze and Silver Medals from CNRS (1978 and 1989), the Medal Award of the Faraday Division of the Royal Society (1985), the “Preis fur Umwelttechologie des Saarlandes”(1988), the Battery Division Award of the ECS (1988), the Pergamon Medal of the ISE (1995), the Volta Medal of the European Section of the ECS (2000), a Doctor Honoris Causa from Uppsala University (2006), the Galileo Award for polymer electrolytes research (2010), and has been appointed as Senior International Scientist of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2011).
As for his private life, Michel attaches high importance to his family life, and is very close to his wife Maryse and their daughter Caroline.
